Oliebollen voorpret / 'Oliebollen' anticipation

english For English please scroll down.

Hè hè, eindelijk konden we echt gaan rijden.

Hm.

Bram in z'n DF, Rotte Rit zomer 2017

english The sky looked dirty. Grey as lead and sometimes even dark yellow. Well, never mind, I’m working in the office right now.

Tonight another meeting was planned in Barendrecht for the preparation of the 'Oliebollentocht' .
The weather forcast is pretty lousy, I could put my contribution in the mail so I don’t have to cycle all the way from Rotterdam to Barendrecht.
I decided to postpone my decision.

Around noon a Whats-App message from Bram appears, if I want to join them on the route to Barendrecht, starting point at the Irene bridge.
And before I realized it I answered ‘yes’.
Hm.

Around three o’clock the worst showers are gone and even no wand then the sun starts to peek through. ‘There you are, it’s not that bad’ I tell myself.
I should not forget to charge the battery when I come home, I don’t want to be without light in the middle of nowhere.

At the end of the afternoon I ride home from traffic jam to traffic jam. It looks like the gentle blue sky with its fluffy, friendly clouds are being chased away by big, dark grey threatening clouds. Oh dear, it shouldn’t  ... ?

Once at home I put the battery on the charger, eat something and checked the route.
Usually I ride along the river Rotte but there is a direct way tot he Irene bridge, a nice well-lighted cycle path.
The routeplanner van de fietsersbond can offer some assistance. Let me see, I know this part, I think I have een there with the running crew ...
Just go straight ahead, can’t go wrong. Only half way there is a small detour, I think it’s done to bypass a junction.
Ok, that’s that. I’ll take this new route. It’s is faster, so I’ll even have time to get lost ;-)

Six o’clock. I take the last things I need and ride the Quest outside. Brrr, quite chilly outside !
The start is no problem, all known territory. I think I must be halfway and yes, it looks like this is the place of the detour.
And with full confidence I drive into this pittoresk residential area …

Unfortunately  my sense of direction seems to be inversely proportional to my stubbornness. I wander through this residential area and suddenly I left it the way I came in. (if you promise not to laugh, you can see my route on this link ...)

And in the mean time all of the hail and snow, which has accumulated on the furry edge of my cap, starts to melt slowly. This ruins my sight as well as my mood.
I take the next exit of the cycle lane only to discover that there is no access to the cycle path on the other side. I’m standing between to lanes of automobiles whizzing by. Going back the Flintstone way is no option, so I wait for less traffic and race between the cars to the next traffic light where I can take the cycle lane again.
Pfiew, that worked !

My hat with the (fake) fur

I hope I didn’t waste to much time, otherwise Bram and Rein are waiting in the cold only because I wanted to take a shorter route …
Ah, there you’ll have it, the phone is ringing.
First find a place where I can park the Quest, then quickly get the phone out of my velomobiel bag, remove the waterproof plastic bag and … he hang up.
I retuned his call, line is busy. Probabely he is leaving a message to my voice mail.

I’m fed up with this sh.t . Lost my way, it’s cold and wet and I’m stalling two other guys. In the cold. I’ll call Bram and tell him I’ll go home. Or should I tell him I’ve got a flat tire and they should go without me ? No, knowing Bram he will turn his DF and come tot he rescue.
I call Bram and tell him I’m on my way. And so I do.

Eventually I recognise some buildings and finally I know where I am. It seems I’m about half a kilometer in front of Bram and Rein.  I call Bram again to let him know where I am and a few minutes later I see both headlights in my rear view mirror. Hè hè, at last we can ride together.

The hail was annoying. It hurt my face and worst of all, it blocked my view. And the lights of the oncoming traffic didn’t help either.
I found a glove in my Quest and with that I try to wipe my glasses clean, with little or no effect. When I wipe my glasses, I automatically push them closer to my face and they fog up at the inside … I try to keep the rear light of the DF in front of me between my mirrors and try to find the middle ground between a safe distance and visability of the rear light.

We were almost on top of the Brienenoord bridge as we saw a bright flash immediately followed by a rolling thunder. Did lightning struck on the modern windmill next tot he bridge ? I noticed I was pushig the pedals a bit harder ...

The hail / snow got worse, visability got less. Bram and Rein were racing down the bridge and it became harder for me to keep track of their rear lights. Under an overpass we waited until the worst of the storm passed us by.

After a while the snow got less. ‘That’s real oliebollen weather, André ’ Rein said to me.
Hm.
Oh well, perhaps this Global Warming will work on the short term to my advantage. We’ll see.

We went on a journey through a fairytale landscape. The cyclepath meandered through a white landscape, the two DF’s in front of me draw their tracks through the fresly fallen snow. They should make a picture for a christmas card of that scene ;-)

I must say I had some trouble to suppress the need to remove and switch the top of both DF’s.
Bram has an light colored top with an orange bottom, Rein has exactly the opposite color combination.

Bram in his DF, Rotte Ride, summer of  2017

Once in Barendrecht we were treated with coffee and cake. Let’s get this party started !
After everything was said and done we went home.
And only a few minutes later, it started snowing again. I try to postpone the cleaning of the glasses as long as possible.

My fingers got back on temperature passing the Brienenoord bridge, after approximately half an hour. I also found a way to keep my glasses relativly clean; lean forward until your face is almost touching the foam cover. The wind will blow away the snow.
And the fact that all the snow not covering your glasses now will fall into your neck, well, every advantage has his dis-advantage, as a good Dutch proverb says.

Eventually I got home just before midnight. I brushed away most of the snow by hand before I took the Quest inside.
Then with a towel I wiped the outside to prevent dripping and stains on my floor.

A little later I heard something drop on the floor. Did I bump a cupboard whlie placing the Quest inside ? A quick inspection but all seems normal.
I didn’t trust it so I looked again. Aha, now the cat’s out of the bag or maybe I should say, now comes the ice out of the wheelarcs !
Quickly I took something to collect all the snow and ice and started mobbing the floor.
After I cleand up the place I took a quick shower and went directly in bed.

Schootbappenritje met Frans Hansen / Ride with Frans Hansen

english For English please scroll down.

010 of geen 010, that is the Question ...
Reactie zoonlief via WhatsApp: 'Mooiste stadion !'

english The weather is fine, we both don't have to work today so why not go for a ride ?

Well, one reason was the fact that Frans had overslept himself.
No problem, we skip the replacement of the Q-Rings on his Quest XS for the standard rond ones (some way we don't seem to find the right position) and start an hour later.
A small stop at the supermarket for Frans his mother in law and then right on to the city.
Afrter delivering the goods we went on our way.

We were cruising along, having fun at high speed on the cyclepath next to the road racing the cars.
Until a blond woman, coming from the right, putting her Chelsea Tractor, which numberplate I'm not going to mention here, right in front of us.
Frans warned her with his klaxon, you could get a heavy ticket for this !

Not much later the woman drove parallel to the cycle path and showed her gratitude by honking her klaxon as well and pointing at her forehead.

I was thinking that this gesture of happiness only belong to a cetrtain population group of the South of Europe.
How nice it is to see the customs of all different populations blend in the Dutch culture ...

010 or no 010, that is the Question ...
On our way we also passed the football stadion 'de Kuip'. And as my son and daughter are massive fans of Feyenoord, I had to stop and take a picture.

Reaction of my son via WhatsApp: 'Nicest stadion !'
Reactie of my beloved daughter: 'What is that ugly thing in front of that nice stadion ?! ;-)'
Oh well, we can't all love Velomobiles ...

Fiets&MakerQuest XS of Frans Hansen
We enjoyed our way back along the river Rotte. Sometimes we had to slalom around the other people enjoying the Rotte on their own ways, but that was no problem. Enough room.

Oncoming traffic. An elderly lady was riding her bike and was coming our way. She made a gesture to slow down and with a loud voice she introduced herself: 'IDIOTS !'
I was cruising at a nice speed and actually she was not my type so I ignored this attempt to get acquainted and continued driving on, enjoying the scenery..

Despite the above mentioned incidents it was a great ride. With this kind of weather everybody wants to enjoy the outdoors, so we need to share the cycle path with runners and other cyclists, or groups of runners and cyclists.
And when everybody respect each other, it will be fine. A small wave, an exchange of a smile will do wonders.
But sometimes you 'll meet the exception which confirms the rule ...
